Why retaining walls fail here
Almost every failed wall we're called out to has the same story: not enough base, no drainage stone, and dirt backfilled straight against the block. Water collects behind the wall, freezes, and pushes it out over a few winters.
We build the other way around — excavate below grade, compact a stone base, set the first course level, add clear drainage rock and fabric behind the wall, run drain tile out to daylight where the site allows, and backfill in lifts. Grading above the wall matters just as much, which is why grading and drainage is part of the same conversation.
Tall walls, walls holding a driveway, or walls with a structure above may require an engineered design or a local permit. We'll tell you when we think a project has reached that point rather than build past it.
